Ishaq Williams last played in a football game during the 2013 season with Notre Dame, but the long layoff didn’t hurt him while trying out for the Giants at their rookie minicamp.

According to multiple reports, Williams did enough to earn a contract with the Giants that he will sign on Monday to officially become a member of their 90-man roster. The deal means Williams will get to continue pushing for an NFL job close to where he grew up.

Williams went to high school in Coney Island and played three seasons at linebacker for Notre Dame before being dismissed from the team after an investigation into academic fraud at the school.

“I look at the positive side of it,” Williams said, via the New York Daily News. “I still have this opportunity. All that happened and I still have the opportunity to move forward and chase my dream. That’s the way I look at it. It’s hard to be angry when I’m still here, you know?”

Getting on the offseason roster is just the first step for Williams, who will try to extend his stay into training camp over the next few weeks.
