Inside the Christian Gonzalez deal

The Patriots and cornerback Christian Gonzalez played beat the clock — and they both won. Gonzalez got his new deal, and the Patriots avoided the possibility of a Gonzalez “injury” that would have kept him out of the Week 1 game against the Seahawks.

The agreement, reached late Monday night, makes Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in terms of new-money average, at $33.75 million annually. Last month, Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon had set a new record, at $33 million per year in new-money average.

Here are the full details of the Gonzalez contract, per a source with knowledge of the terms:

1. Signing bonus: $33 million.

2. 2026 base salary: $2.259482 million, fully guaranteed.

3. 2027 base salary: $18.119 million, fully guaranteed.

4. 2028 offseason workout bonus: $300,000, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2027 league year (but must be earned).

5. 2028 base salary: $16 million, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2027 league year.

6. 2028 per-game active roster bonus: $100,000 per game ($1.7 million total), guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2027 league year (but must be earned).

7. 2029 offseason workout bonus: $300,000, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2029 league year (but must be earned).

8. 2029 base salary: $23 million, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2028 league year.

9. 2029 per-game active roster bonus: $100,000 per game ($1.7 million total), guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2028 league year (but must be earned).

10. 2030 offseason workout bonus: $300,000.

11. 2030 base salary: $24 million, $5.71518 million of which is guaranteed for injury at signing (it does not vest as fully guaranteed).

12. 2030 per-game active roster bonus: $100,000 per game ($1.7 million total).

13. 2031 offseason workout bonus: $300,000.

14. 2031 base salary: $31 million.

15. 2031 per-game active roster bonus: $100,000 per game ($1.7 million total).

The total six-year payout is $155.928482 million, for an average of $25.9 million at signing.

The deal has $102 million in guarantees, with the first two years fully guaranteed (at $53.298482 million), and the next two years guaranteed as a practical matter, given the rolling guarantees that vest one year early.

Witherspoon’s deal has five years of per-game roster bonuses in the amount of $850,000 annually. Gonzalez’s deal doubles that amount to $1.7 million, but applies only over the final four years. The difference ($4.25 million for Witherspoon and $5.1 million for Gonzalez) helped pushed Gonzalez’s APY to $33.75 million. And while the per-game roster bonuses count toward the base value, it requires Gonzalez to not miss games in order to maximize the difference.

Regardless, he owns the new record high for cornerbacks in new-money APY. And the strong possibility that he wasn’t going to play without getting a deal that put him above Witherspoon in the pecking order was likely the key to getting the Patriots to put him there.
