Woody Johnson didn’t get the ambassadorship to the U.K. Another NFL figure received a different appointment.
Herschel Walker will be the new U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas.
President-elect Donald Trump announced the move on Tuesday. Senate approval is required.
Walker’s association with Trump dates back more than 40 years, to the USFL’s New Jersey Generals. (Trump bought the team after Walker was signed.)
In the realm of politics, Walker was Trump’s hand-picked candidate for a 2022 Senate run in Georgia. Walker did not win.
A superstar in college, Walker never quite became what many expected him to be in pro football. After running for a career-high 1,514 yards in 1988, the Cowboys fleeced the Vikings for a treasure trove of picks and players, with more picks tied to cutting or trading the players, in exchange for Walker. He spent less than three seasons in Minnesota.
He’ll now spend four years in the Bahamas. And, as best we can tell, the Bahamas didn’t have to give up any draft picks or players to get him.
