The Rams broke ground on their new stadium on Thursday with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on hand and discussing where he might be attending similar ceremonies in the future.
One spot might be Las Vegas, where the state has approved a financing plan for a Raiders stadium that Raiders owner Mark Davis has said he plans to call home. A ballot measure to provide financing for a new stadium in San Diego fell well short of approval, however, and that leaves them with uncertain plans for a future that may include joining the Rams at their new digs.
Goodell said neither move would happen in a perfect world.
“If we get our issues resolved in San Diego, and our issues resolved in Oakland, I think that’s the ideal solution, frankly,” Goodell said. “I think that’s what we would all like to see happen. But there’s a lot that has to get done in those two communities to get there.”
The Chargers’ option to join the Rams runs into January and the Raiders will likely seek approval from NFL owners on their prospective move in the offseason, so there’s not a lot of time for Goodell’s ideal solutions to present themselves.
