The Giants were thin at running back when Tuesday started, but they’ve got a full complement of backs as the day comes to an end.
In addition to signing Kregg Lumpkin, the Giants will sign former Redskins running back Ryan Torain to help the team weather the loss of Andre Brown to a broken leg. Jason LaCanfora of CBSSports.com was the first to report the news and Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger reports that the team will waive offensive lineman Selvish Capers to make room for Torain.
Torain has not played in the NFL since the Redskins released him late last December. Torain looked like he would grab hold of the job in Washington after running for 742 yards and scoring six touchdowns while playing 10 games and starting eight in 2010. He slumped to 3.4 yards per carry in 2011, however, and wound up losing his job to Evan Royster and Roy Helu.
Torain followed Mike Shanahan to Washington. He was originally a fifth-round pick of the Broncos in 2008 and played two games with them in what was Shanahan’s final season as head coach in Denver before tearing his ACL.
It will be interesting to see how the Giants divvy up the work behind Ahmad Bradshaw. Rookie David Wilson hasn’t enamored the coaches with his overall grasp on the responsibilities that come with the job, especially pass protection, which could open the door for the two new arrivals to grab work down the stretch for the defending champs.
