For a minute or two on Thursday night, it looked like the season was over for Jets quarterback Geno Smith. Hit low, Geno’s left leg hyperextended, and down he went.
We’ve seen it plenty of times before. A quarterback’s lead leg, without the benefit of a brace, gets hit while planted and boom goes the ACL. As Smith was on his back, that was the obvious fear.
And then CBS went to commercial and returned from break -- and Smith wasn’t on a cart but on his feet on the sidelines, throwing the ball and preparing to re-enter the game.
Re-enter the game he did, continuing to lead the Jets toward a near upset of the Patriots.
After the game, Smith said that he’s fine. Despite a moment that created the clear impression he’d be anything but fine.
“I felt some pain in my knee, but thank God it went away and I was able to get back to it,” Smith told reporters after the game.
He said that there will be no MRI, and that Smith feels fine.
It doesn’t change the fact that the Jets are 1-6. But it means that Smith will be able to continue to play and develop and grow in Marty Mornhinweg’s offense. Which of course may not matter if/when (when) there’s a new coaching staff and a new offense in 2015.
