During his time with the Patriots, Bill Belichick managed to keep the details of his compensation cloaked in secrecy. At North Carolina, he’ll have no such luck.
As a public institution, the details must be revealed. And that’s what the program did on Thursday, posting Belichick’s term sheet online.
Belichick’s base deal covers five years, at $10 million per year. The first three years are guaranteed.
The agreement includes up to $3.5 million in annual incentives, based on wins, conference championships, postseason success, final poll ranking, coach of the year, and academics.
The term sheet gives Belichick $10 million per year for assistant coaches, $1 million for strength and conditioning staff, and $5.3 million for support staff (including the G.M. position, which pays up to $1.5 million). It makes no specific mention of his son, Stephen, as an assistant or potential successor. (Obviously, however, he could be hired with the $10 million budget for assistants.)
Although Belichick has said regarding the possibility of jumping back to the NFL, “I didn’t come here to leave,” his buyout after June 1, 2025 becomes only $1 million. Which means that he can quickly and easily exit, if he wants, after one season. (The buyout before June 1, 2025, is $10 million.)
