Former NFL defensive lineman dies following stroke

Gary “Big Hands” Johnson, who played for the Chargers from 1975 through 1984 and the 49ers in 1984 and 1985, has died following a stroke, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Johnson was 57.

A defensive lineman, Johnson was a four-time Pro Bowler and a two-time first-team All Pro. He qualified for the annual all-star game from 1979 through 1982.

Johnson was a member of the 1981 Chargers, which lost in the AFC title game at Cincinnati, in frigid conditions.
