Former NFL linebacker Aaron Maybin retired from football Tuesday just five years after being selected in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills.
His retirement was announced by the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.
The 2009 NFL Draft class certainly won’t be remembered as one of the most productive drafts in history. Maybin is just one of several duds from the first round of that draft. Only six of 32 selections have made at least one Pro Bowl appearance in five seasons. Green Bay Packers nose tackle B.J. Raji is the only member of the Top 10 to earn a Pro Bowl selection.
Maybin joins former Seattle Seahawks fourth overall pick Aaron Curry as players from the 2009 class already out of football.
Maybin, selected 11th overall by the Bills, played just two seasons in Buffalo before being released. Maybin signed with the New York Jets and was made into a rush linebacker in Rex Ryan’s defense. Maybin had a somewhat productive first season with the Jets, picking up six sacks - the only six of his NFL career - and four forced fumbles.
Maybin appeared in just eight games the following season and recorded just one tackle before being released. He spent training camp with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2013 but didn’t make the team. He played last season for the Argonauts.
Maybin appeared in 48 games with just 36 tackles, six sacks and five forced fumbles in four seasons played.
