For first time as college or pro QB, Jameis Winston doesn’t reach end zone

The Buccaneers drafted Jameis Winston first overall last year so he could lead them to exactly this spot.

So it’s unusual that the day the plan became manifest, he didn’t score at all.

Via Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, Sunday’s 16-11 win over the Saints marked the first time in Winston’s 56 college or pro games that he didn’t account for a touchdown.

And he’s totally OK with that.

“I know I didn’t get a touchdown, but wins, I love wins,” Winston said. “As long as we’ve got a win, touchdowns don’t mean much, unless it’s a touchdown to win a game. Thank God for our defense. I keep saying that all the time.”

He should.

The Bucs won their fifth straight game by keeping New Orleans out of the end zone altogether, breaking a streak of 22 career games for Drew Brees against them with a touchdown pass. They held the Saints to 46 rushing yards, shutting down an offense that had been quite potent.

And that, as much as Winston’s improved play, is the reason the Bucs are sitting in position to make the playoffs today.
