Football in mud, the way it was meant to be played

Oct28

With all these high-tech artificial surfaces and/or half-grass-half-plastic blends and/or drainage systems that would keep the field dry even if it were parked under Niagara Falls, we rarely see an NFL game played in the mud anymore.

Plenty of high schools in the northeast have had the pleasure of playing in the rain/dirt/grass mixture lately, including Friday night. Though I had to start my trek to New York early in order to stay ahead of the October blizzard, Mrs. PFT snapped this picture of Florio Jr. during his high school game played outside of T. Boone Pickens’ favorite new city, Morgantown.

The team, Notre Dame High School, lost by a point in overtime. But when Junior is older he’ll remember only the special feel of the slop on his shirt and the glory of a grimy mouthguard in his teeth.

Though the moment may end up occupying a special place in his memory, the photo captures what he possibly was thinking at it was all happening.

“When is this going to end?”
