The Commanders should lead 7-3. Instead, the game is tied 7-7.
Washington had Atlanta stopped on third down twice on the Falcons’ second drive. Either stop would have resulted in a field goal. The first came on fourth-and-4 from the Washington 28 when Riley Patterson kicked a 46-yard field goal.
Cornerback Mike Sainristil lined up offsides, though, costing Washington a 5-yard penalty and giving the Falcons a first down.
The Falcons drove to the Washington 6, where they faced third-and-goal. Rookie Michael Penix threw incomplete to Drake London, but cornerback Michael Davis was called for defensive pass interference.
That gave the Falcons a first down at the 1, and Bijan Robinson scored easily with 5:10 left.
Penix is 6-of-11 for 52 yards and an interception.
