The Cowboys are probably going to have to wait to get a look at their first-round pick in a game.
Via Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the rookie running back remains bothered by a hamstring injury, and since he hasn’t practiced in more than a week, it’s unlikely he’d play in Saturday’s preseason opener against the Rams..
“They need practice time. They need to practice,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We’re not just going to put them out there in a game situation. A lot of the guys who haven’t practiced will practice for at least three or so days and oftentimes more than that before we put them out there.
“He is making progress and again he falls into the category of soft tissue injuries that you have to be pretty deliberate with before you bring guys back. That’s one of those injuries if you bring him back a day or two too soon all of a sudden you can have a six- or seven-week injury and we don’t want that for him or for anybody else on our team. He’ll continue to work on the side. He’s done a little bit more each day.”
The Cowboys are still without running backs Darren McFadden (NFI) and Lance Dunbar (PUP), which leaves Alfred Morris and sixth-rounder Darius Jackson to go with Rod Smith and fullback Keith Smith.
That ought to get them through a preseason game, while they wait for their big investment to get well.
