The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed former Temple running back Matt Brown to a contract on Thursday. The deal never could have happened if not for an expired passport.
According to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Brown had agreed to sign a deal with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and was scheduled to fly to Saskatchewan to sign the deal on Tuesday. However, when Brown got to the airport he was unable to board the flight because it turns out his passport had expired.
Brown was busy trying to get a new passport when the Buccaneers called Brown’s agent, Martin Magid (also known as Elvis Dumervil’s former agent), and offered him a contract. Brown chose to sign with the Buccaneers instead. It’s one of a very few times when an expired passport ultimately proved to be beneficial.
Brown rushed for 2,647 yards and 23 touchdowns during his career at Temple.
