Eli Manning shrugs off Tiki’s call for Coughlin’s firing

When former Giants running back Tiki Barber said the team should fire head coach Tom Coughlin, we didn’t make too big a deal of the story. Although we mentioned it in our Tuesday morning one-liners, it feels like we’ve reached the point where most people don’t really care to hear Barber dredge up his personal animosity toward Coughlin.

That seems to be how Eli Manning feels.

Asked by reporters today to respond to Barber’s comments about Coughlin, Manning shrugged it off.

“That’s nice of him. It’s good to hear from old Tiki,” Manning said, via Art Stapleton of the Record.

Asked if it matters to the current players when a former player calls for the coach to be fired, Manning answered, “I think it depends on your opinion of that player.”

Without coming right out and saying so, Manning was clearly implying that the current players in the Giants’ locker room don’t have a very high opinion of Barber, and therefore aren’t particularly interested in Barber’s opinion of Coughlin. As great a player as Barber was during his time with the Giants, he doesn’t seem to have too many supporters left there.
