Eddie Lacy has “no idea” how free agency will work

Packers running back Eddie Lacy is out for the season with an ankle injury, and he hits free agency in March. He says he’s unsure what to expect once he’s on the open market.

“Honestly, I have no idea how any of that works,” Lacy told ESPN.

A big question facing the Packers or any other team interested in Lacy’s services will be whether he can be trusted to stay in shape. Lacy’s weight was a subject of much discussion in Green Bay, and although he played well before the ankle injury, averaging 5.1 yards a carry, there were reports that he ballooned up to 255 or 265 pounds early in the season. Lacy, however, insists he’ll be in shape whenever offseason work begins, on whatever team he plays for.

“I’ll definitely be ready,” he said. “I don’t know when it is, but definitely I’ll be able to start training in the offseason and running on a scheduled program.”

The Packers generally don’t break the bank in free agency, so if some other team makes Lacy a big offer, Green Bay may not match it. But it remains to be seen whether any team makes him a big offer. Lacy will be an intriguing free agent, and he’s not the only one who doesn’t know what free agency will bring him.
