Former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is not impressed with the way his old team handled this offseason.
McNabb told Dan Levy of BillyPenn.com that the Eagles shouldn’t have re-signed Sam Bradford and then moved up to the second overall pick in the draft to select Carson Wentz.
“And now you sign — which was dumb — you sign Sam Bradford to a multi-year deal and give him big money, then you trade picks to move up to No. 2 – that was dumb. I mean, nothing against Carson Wentz, but why would you do that? That’s just a bad business decision from the Philadelphia Eagles,” McNabb said.
In 1999, McNabb was -- like Wentz -- the No. 2 pick in the draft, and the Eagles opened the season with a veteran journeyman starter until McNabb was ready. That veteran journeyman, Doug Pederson, is now the Eagles’ head coach, and McNabb thinks Pederson should have used Chase Daniel in the veteran journeyman role while letting Bradford walk.
“Chase Daniel is not a bad player. Chase Daniel can hold the fort down for six, eight, 10 weeks and then if things aren’t going well you move a slow transition to Carson Wentz,” McNabb said.
Instead, Bradford will start at the beginning of the season, knowing he’s at risk of being benched as soon as he falters, and knowing that Wentz is the future of the franchise.
