Buccaneers offensive lineman Dominique Robertson says he was mistreated by police after he was shot last week.
Robertson has filed a formal complaint against the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in connection with the matter. Police questioned Robertson in connection with the shooting.
“We were terribly concerned about Mr. Robertson’s welfare and the blatant disregard for his rights, health, and safety,” Robertson’s lawyer told ESPN. “Not allowing his attorney access to check on his welfare, and denying him water, medication, and access to medical attention was abuse on the part of the Sheriff’s department.”
Robertson was shot in the back, leg and buttocks on June 30. He was hospitalized and released the next day, then detained for questioning by police for almost six hours.
Robertson has had issues with the police before: He is currently on probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor obstruction of an officer and misdemeanor assault. In this case, however, Robertson’s attorney says he was simply an innocent bystander who was wrongly treated by police like a suspect.
