Injuries cost Texans cornerback Derek Stingley big chunks of time in his first two seasons, but he’s been healthy in 2024 and the results have shown why he was the third overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Stingley’s Week 15 performance against the Dolphins was a prime example. Stingley had two interceptions, including one he ripped out of the hands of Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, in Houston’s 20-12 win. Hill was limited to two catches on the day and Stingley added five tackles and two tackles for loss in the game.
The NFL announced on Wednesday that Stingley has been named the AFC defensive player of the week in recognition of that performance.
It’s the first time Stingley’s taken the award and he looks like he’s on his way to plenty of other accolades in the future.
