The NFL Players Association announced on Friday that Saints quarterback Derek Carr has been named their Community MVP for Week 17.
Carr and his wife Heather hosted a holiday lunch for nine families who have been experiencing financial struggles or have escaped from domestic violence on December 21. In addition to a meal, each family received bags filled with gifts and $5,000 to help them navigate their current situations.
“I was shocked when I found out about my nomination for this award,” Carr said in a statement. “While certainly honored, the reason Heather and I did this was the realization of being able to help people in need, especially during the holidays. I was just doing what I felt the Lord wants us to do in these situations, with what He has provided for us.”
The NFLPA will donate $10,000 to Carr’s foundation or the charity of his choice in recognition of the award. Carr will also join the other weekly winners in being eligible for the Alan Page Award at the end of the season.
