Dennis Allen says it is “critically urgent” for the Saints to play better

Saints coach Dennis Allen says his 5-6 team needs to recognize that now is the time to turn things around if they want to make the playoffs.

Asked if there’s a sense of urgency from Allen and his team, he insisted that they’re well aware of how important it is to get things turned around.

“I think it is critically urgent,” Allen said. “I think the message to the team was ‘That’s unacceptable, we’ve got to be better.’ But just because we stand up here and we’re able to talk in a tone and in a way that doesn’t necessarily say that we understand the sense of urgency, I can certainly appreciate the question and I can appreciate the fans’ urgency and I can assure you that the people inside the building feel the same sense of urgency.”

Allen acknowledged that a few key mistakes in Sunday’s loss to the Falcons were unacceptable.

“It was frustrating that we weren’t able to capitalize on the opportunities we had,” Allen said. “That was frustrating. . . . We’ve got to coach better and we’ve got to play better.”

The NFC South is a very winnable division this year, and if a Saints team that has taken a win-now approach to building its roster fails to win its division, there may be a sense of urgency about finding a new head coach.
