Darren McFadden had surgery on fractured elbow

Cowboys RB Darren McFadden reportedly injured his elbow while trying to catch his cell phone from falling to the ground and now he may have lost his starting job to Ezekiel Elliott.

The Cowboys are going to be without one of their veteran running backs when training camp opens next month.

Coach Jason Garrett announced Tuesday that Darren McFadden had surgery to repair a fractured elbow. McFadden hurt the elbow in an accident at home two weeks ago, but took part in practice before learning about the extent of the injury on Monday.

Garrett expects McFadden to miss “a couple months” as a result of the injury. That should allow for first-round pick Ezekiel Elliott to get plenty of reps in this week’s minicamp and training camp as he tries to solidify himself ahead of McFadden and Alfred Morris at the top of the team’s depth chart.

McFadden isn’t the only Cowboys player who will be recuperating in the next few weeks. Defensive end Benson Mayowa will have a knee scope Tuesday.

Mayowa isn’t expected to miss training camp time, which is good news for a Cowboys defense that will be without defensive ends Randy Gregory and DeMarcus Lawrence while they serve suspensions for the first four games of the regular season.
