Dan Henning likely to retire, but Tony Sparano would like him back

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross isn’t saying whether head coach Tony Sparano’s job is safe in 2011. But Sparano is saying that if he’s back, he wants offensive coordinator Dan Henning back with him.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that most people in the Dolphins facility expect Henning to retire, but Sparano would like Henning to stick around.

“I think that Dan Henning, for Tony Sparano, has been tremendous,” Sparano said. “I think the guy has done a wonderful job during my time here.”

So how can Sparano say Henning did a good job when the Dolphins have scored 14, 10 and 10 points in the last three games?

“I look at the entire body of work, you guys just look at the last three or four games,” Sparano told reporters. “I look at the whole body of work and this guy has done a tremendous job.”

It remains to be seen, however, whether the 68-year-old Henning will be doing a tremendous job for the Dolphins, or anyone else, in 2011. After a long career in professional football that included a brief stint as a backup quarterback for the Chargers and gigs as an assistant with the Oilers, Jets, Dolphins, Redskins, Falcons, Redskins again, Chargers, Lions, Bills, Jets again, Panthers and Dolphins again, he might be ready to call it quits.
