Matt Bryant was named the NFC special teams player of the week after nailing a game-winning kick in overtime, something he has in common with the AFC honoree for Week One.
Bills kicker Dan Carpenter got the nod after hitting a 27-yard field goal to lift the Bills to a 23-20 win over the Bears. It was Carpenter’s third make of the day and he also hit both of his extra point attempts. Among those made field goals was a 50-harder, which was the longest of the week in the AFC.
The NFL also considered Bengals kicker Mike Nugent, who hit five field goals against the Steelers, and Dolphins linebacker Chris McCain, who blocked a punt in Miami’s victory over New England, for the honor.
It’s the fifth time that Carpenter has been the player of the week, but the first time since he was a Dolphin in 2010. Carpenter gets a chance to kick against his former team in Week Two.
