It’s official: Curtis Painter is the Indianapolis Colts’ starting quarterback.

Colts coach Jim Caldwell confirmed today that with Kerry Collins still out of practice after suffering a concussion on Sunday, Painter will start Monday night’s game at Tampa Bay.

Collins was brought in as an emergency stopgap after Peyton Manning’s neck injury turned out to be worse than the Colts realized, and Painter was abysmal in the preseason. But now Painter is the Colts’ best healthy option.

Painter struggled at first when he came in to relieve Collins in the Colts’ loss to the Steelers on Sunday, but he eventually settled down and led Indianapolis down the field for a fourth-quarter touchdown.
