The Colts added running back Michael Hill to the roster with guard Hugh Thornton heading to injured reserve, a move that leaves them with four players at the position heading into Sunday’s game against the Broncos.
Outside of Dan Herron being the starter, the Colts aren’t saying how those backs stack up. Zurlon Tipton was the No. 2 last week, running 11 times for 40 yards while Trent Richardson played one snap without touching the ball. The Colts indicated that things went that way because Richardson missed time with an illness last week, but coach Chuck Pagano wouldn’t say if things would be different this time around.
“We’re going to evaluate the situation as we go through the week and we’ll know more as we go through the week,” Pagano said, via ESPN.com.
There’s not much reason to think Richardson will play a significant role this weekend. Herron fumbled twice last week and it hasn’t impacted his role as the starter, which tells you all that you need to know about what the Colts think about Richardson after two years and barely three yards per carry.
That makes the real question the one about how much longer Richardson will take up a roster spot that could go to a player with a chance of making a positive impact on the team.
