As quarterback Peyton Manning was struggling to recover from neck surgery performed in May, the team lured Kerry Collins out of retirement.
And now Collins is likely heading back into retirement.
The team announced today that Collins has been placed on injured reserve. He suffered a concussion in Week Three against the Steelers. Prior to the Week Seven game against the Saints, Collins participated in practice on a limited basis, and he was listed as questionable to play.
And so the guy who has been ruled out for every game this year -- Manning -- remains on the active roster, and Collins is now officially done for the year.
In his three starts, Collins added 481 yards to his career passing total, enough to leapfrog Joe Montana for 10th on the all-time list. Collins has 40,922 career passing yards. At $4 million in compensation for 2011, Collins also made $1.33 million per game.
It would make sense at some point to put Manning on injured reserve, too, unless the team is holding out hope that Manning will be able to show that he is back at 100 percent before the team has to decide whether to give him another $28 million in March 2012.
