The bad news for the Colts is that Andrew Luck is out 2-6 weeks with a lacerated kidney. The good news is that the Colts have shown themselves this season to be the only team in the league that wins with a backup quarterback.
Indianapolis is 2-0 this season with Matt Hasselbeck as its starting quarterback, making the Colts an extreme outlier: All other NFL teams are a combined 3-15 when forced to play their backup quarterbacks because of an injury to the starter.
Here’s the list of each team that has had its starting quarterback miss at least one start with an injury, and that team’s record with each quarterback:
Colts: 2-5 with Andrew Luck, 2-0 with Matt Hasselbeck.
Steelers: 3-2 with Ben Roethlisberger, 2-1 with Michael Vick, 0-1 with Landry Jones
Browns: 1-6 with Josh McCown, 1-1 with Johnny Manziel
Bears: 3-4 with Jay Cutler, 0-1 with Jimmy Clausen
Bills: 5-2 with Tyrod Taylor, 0-2 with EJ Manuel
Titans: 2-4 with Marcus Mariota, 0-2 with Zach Mettenberger
Cowboys: 2-0 with Tony Romo, 0-3 with Brandon Weeden, 0-3 with Matt Cassel
Given that, the Colts have to feel pretty good about where they are, even without Luck. And Jerry Jones has to be wondering why he didn’t sign Hasselbeck.
