Veteran running back Clinton Portis, largely forgotten throughout the 2011 training camp and preseason, will soon be getting another chance to get back into the league.

Jason La Canfora reported earlier in the day that Portis will work out for the Seahawks this week. Per La Canfora, it’s not expected that the Seahawks will sign Portis.

It would be a surprise at this point if anyone signs Portis before the first weekend of NFL action. Because any player with four or more years of service is entitled to the balance of his full salary as termination pay (a one-time benefit for every NFL player), guys like Portis and Tiki Barber and Brian Waters and Darren Sharper, etc., who currently don’t have jobs likely won’t have jobs until after teams have played their first NFL games.

If the Seahawks like what they see, Portis could be seeing an offer come Week Two. If they don’t, Portis will keep waiting.

Portis, who turns 30 tomorrow, has 9,923 career rushing yards in nine NFL seasons. He ranks 26th on the all-time list.
