The Chiefs have reached a deal to take one of their prospective unrestricted free agents off the market.
Kansas City has signed fullback Anthony Sherman to a contract extension, the team said Wednesday. The club did not announce the length of Sherman’s new deal.
The 25-year-old Sherman has played in all 24 games for the Chiefs since being acquired by the club in the 2013 offseason, catching 23 passes for 204 yards and two TDs. Sherman (5-10, 242) was a fifth-round pick of the Cardinals in 2011 and spent his first two seasons with Arizona. He was in the final year of his rookie contract, per Rotoworld data.
“It was important for us to keep Anthony here in Kansas City,” Chiefs G.M. John Dorsey said Wednesday, according to the club. “He brings a lot to our football team with not only his play, but his work ethic, leadership and character. He doesn’t get a lot of recognition at his position, but he has been a key component to our success as a team.”
The Chiefs (5-3) are one game out of the lead in the AFC West. Kansas City plays at Buffalo (5-3) on Sunday.
