Next season is the last covered by the deal tight end Travis Kelce signed with the Chiefs after being drafted, but it he’ll be sticking around Kansas City longer than one more year.
The Chiefs announced Friday that they have reached agreement on a contract extension with their 2013 third-round pick. They didn’t offer any details about the length or value of the deal at this point, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that it is a five-year pact worth $46 million with $20.5 million in guarantees. That’s a bit more than Zach Ertz got in his recent extension with the Eagles.
“Today we reached an agreement with Travis and his representatives on a contract extension,” Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey said in a statement. “He’s a talented football player that has become an important piece to what we do offensively. Travis is a high-character guy and a leader in our locker room.”
Kelce is currently in Hawaii for this weekend’s Pro Bowl, which is the first time in three NFL seasons that he’s made the trip. Based on his production, it’s not likely to be the last time he’s selected for the game.
Kelce played just one game as a rookie because of a knee injury, but has 139 catches for 1,737 yards and 10 touchdowns over the last two seasons. He added 14 catches and 151 yards in two postseason games this year.
