Chargers receiver Vincent Brown scored a touchdown in Saturday night’s preseason game, but it came at a significant price: Brown was hit in the end zone by Cowboys defensive back Akwasi Owusu-Ansah just after scoring and suffered a broken ankle on the play.

Brown will have surgery and miss at least eight weeks, Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego reports.

The Chargers had high hopes this season for Brown, a 2011 third-round draft pick who caught 19 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie. But surgery for a broken ankle will be a tough injury for any receiver to recover from and still contribute during the season.

After running back Ryan Mathews suffered a broken collarbone last week, the Chargers have now had two significant injuries to offensive skill position players, just two weeks into the preseason.
