The Chargers announced the release of defensive tackle Antonio Garay on Tuesday.
Garay, 33, notched 16 tackles and one sack in eight games for San Diego in 2012. He started a combined 28 games for San Diego in 2010 and 2011.
Garay’s journey to an NFL starting job was a long one. He was the Browns’ last pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, but he didn’t become a first-stringer until seven years later with the Chargers.
According to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Garay’s departure will save the Chargers $5 million against the salary cap.
