Just when it looked like the San Francisco 49ers would land quarterback David Carr to serve as the backup to Alex Smith, the deal is now indefinitely on hold.

John Crumpacker of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Carr left the Bay Area on Saturday night without signing a contract to join the team.

The 49ers told Crumpacker that negotiations are continuing.

He reportedly is also drawing interest from the Cardinals and the Browns. His most recent team, the Giants, might also try to keep the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft, who has served as Eli Manning’s understudy for the past two years.

The fact that he’s the only free-agent quarterback who has met with a prospective team proves that this year’s crop of veterans is causing, to date, little or no excitement.
