Cardinals pick up Michael Floyd’s option

Last week they hadn’t decided, but now they have: The Cardinals will pick up the fifth-year option on receiver Michael Floyd’s rookie contract.

The Cardinals told Floyd they’re picking up the 2016 option, Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports.

Arizona chose Floyd with the 13th overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, and he has played fairly well. But there was some talk that the team didn’t think he had played well enough to justify the $7.3 million salary that Floyd will now earn in 2016.

Of course, if Floyd has a disappointing 2015 season, the Cardinals can still cut him and not pay a dime of that $7.3 million, as long as he isn’t injured. So picking up the fifth-year option isn’t a big risk. It’s a move that makes a lot of sense.
