Cardinals cut Todd Heap

Todd Heap’s time in Arizona is done.

The Cardinals have released Heap, a 12-year veteran tight end, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

A 2001 first-round draft pick of the Ravens, Heap has been to two Pro Bowls. But he’s been a disappointment in Arizona since signing a two-year contract with the Cardinals before the 2011 season. Last year he caught just 24 passes for 283 yards, and this year a knee injury has limited him to just two games. Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said last week that Heap was close to being ready to return, but now he’ll have to return for some other team.

Heap will now be available to any team that wants to pick up the final four games of his contract on waivers. If he passes through waivers, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent.
