The Dolphins considered the prospect of trading defensive lineman Calais Campbell before last month’s trade deadline, but head coach Mike McDaniel shot down the notion and Campbell remained in Miami.
Another exit may open up before the year is out, however. While speaking to reporters from the team’s facility on Wednesday, Campbell said, via David Furones of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, that there was some “small conversation” about releasing him if the Dolphins fell out of playoff contention late in the year.
“I don’t know if we’re there just yet, but it’s definitely something you think about,” Campbell said.
Campbell said he never lives “with regret” when asked if he would have liked to move on to a team with a better record. If the Dolphins do let him go, Campbell will be subject to waivers so he wouldn’t be guaranteed to land with a contender. Given the timing, it is more likely that such teams would be interested in a veteran defensive tackle so it will be interesting to see if anything happens with Campbell in Miami.
