Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield’s absence from practice on Wednesday and Thursday were a sign that he won’t be playing against the Steelers in Week 6 and offensive coordinator Zac Robinson confirmed it at his press conference on Thursday.
Mayfield was scheduled to try to throw the ball on Wednesday as a test to see if his dislocated right thumb has healed enough for him to grip a football and run the offense, but Robinson said that things have not progressed to that point yet.
“He’s doing everything he can,” Robinson said. “I know he wanted to play in this game so badly. . . . The timing on these things, you just never really know. Trying to get stuff going on Monday and it’s just not quite ready.”
Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels is set to make his second straight start. Daniels was 19-of-25 for 189 yards and a touchdown in last Thursday’s win over the Cowboys.
