Broncos V.P. of Football Operations John Elway announced on Twitter Friday evening that he plans to interview Jaguars offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter for the head coaching vacancy in Denver. Elway didn’t provide a date for the meeting, but did confirm that the Broncos have received permission to do so from Jacksonville.
A longtime college coach before entering the pros in 2007, Koetter just wrapped up his fourth season running the Jaguars’ offense. Jacksonville has ranked better than 15th in the league in total yards once during Koetter’s tenure -- his first season on the job. Koetter’s offenses in the last three years have finished 24th, 24th, and 18th in points scored.
Koetter joins a list of Denver head coaching candidates that includes Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison, Broncos interim head coach Eric Studesville, and Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell.
The Broncos were previously thought to have interest in Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey. Williams has insisted otherwise, while Mularkey pulled out of the hunt a day after Elway referred to him as “Mark” in a press conference.
So far, Elway appears to be targeting quantity over quality in his search for Josh McDaniels’ replacement.
