Under then-coach Herm Edwards, the Kansas City Chiefs believed they stole a future franchise quarterback when Alabama’s Brodie Croyle lasted until their third-round pick in the 2006 draft. Croyle never panned out, of course, and at age 29 he has decided to hang up the cleats.
“I’m very grateful for everything football gave me,” Croyle told the Birmingham News. “I just felt it was time, and that’s a mutual decision with NFL football. There’s very few guys who retire on their own terms. It was a fun ride, but I’m glad to be back, glad to be doing what I’m doing.”
Croyle is currently working with Tuscaloosa’s IngeWood Land Company and pursuing his real estate license.
In five NFL seasons -- all with the Chiefs -- Croyle managed an 0-10 won-loss record and 8:9 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Though strong armed, Croyle was inaccurate and physically brittle. He’s had three ACL surgeries.
“Your body is basically your resume,” he said. “I knew it was time.”
