The NFL’s unlikeliest starting quarterback has given the Panthers a puncher’s chance against the Ravens.
Brian St. Pierre hooked up with David Gettis on an 88-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, the second-longest pass play against the Ravens in franchise history. Josh Wilson will get the goat horns for that play as Gettis beat him badly, but the Ravens have gotten a shoddy effort from more than just Wilson on Sunday afternoon.
That touchdown made the score 20-13 in a game that’s much tighter than the stat sheet might indicate. Before the Gettis play, the Ravens had outgained the Panthers by more than 100 yards and they hold a healthy edge in time of possession, but turnovers have been a big equalizer.
A botched handoff by Joe Flacco and Ray Rice led to one turnover and Anquan Boldin also lost a fumble to keep the Panthers within range of a couple of big plays. Can St. Pierre make them? We’ll see, but we’ve seen that he’s got a better shot than most guys who were stay-at-home dads a couple of weeks ago.
UPDATE: It seems St. Pierre’s big play only served to wake up the Ravens. They’ve scored 17 straight points to put the game well in hand with just under five minutes to play.
