Titans head coach Brian Callahan confirmed on Wednesday that the team is benching Will Levis and starting Mason Rudolph at quarterback against the Colts on Sunday.
Callahan said at his press conference that it was not an “easy decision” to sit down the 2023 second-round pick given that Levis’s development was a big reason why Callahan was hired this offseason and he said that he’s seen improvement from Levis over the course of the year. Callahan added that there “hasn’t been enough consistency,” however, and said that he believes the right call for the team at the moment is for Rudolph to play.
Callahan added that he still believes in Levis’s future as an NFL quarterback.
“I should be very clear that it doesn’t mean this is the end of Will’s ability to be a good quarterback,” Callahan said. “Situationally in the season and where we’re at, feel like we needed a spark at the quarterback position.”
Further answers about the Titans’ belief in Levis as a long-term starting option will come in the offseason, but it’s probably safe to say that he won’t be as firmly entrenched in the job as he was heading into the 2024 campaign.
