The Seahawks’ stunning comeback in the final minutes of regulation during the NFC Championship game was the product of many things falling into place, including an onside kick that was recovered by wide receiver Chris Matthews after it clattered off of Packers tight end Brandon Bostick.

Seattle kicker Steven Hauschka’s kick went directly toward Bostick, who tried to reel it in but had the ball bounce off of his helmet instead. The unfortunate outcome for the Packers wasn’t how things were drawn up on the page. Bostick was supposed to block on the play, leaving the ball for wide receiver Jordy Nelson but he improvised in the heat of the moment.

“I felt like I had my hands on the ball and it went through,” Bostick said, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “I got hit and I didn’t have the ball. ... It wasn’t my job at all. I was supposed to block. I just reacted to the ball and thought I could get it. Obviously, I couldn’t.”

Bostick said that he felt like he let everybody down on the play and that he’s going to do his best to move on from one of a series of plays that left season-ending scars for the Packers that will need some time to fade away.
