Brady: Undefeated season “furthest thing from anybody’s mind”

At the end of September, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said that he didn’t understand comparisons with the 2007 Patriots team that won 18 straight games before falling to the Giants in the Super Bowl.

The Patriots have won four more games since then to run their record to 7-0 and they’ve done it in convincing enough fashion that discussion about another undefeated regular season has gotten louder. Brady’s still not jumping on board, however.

“That would be the furthest thing from anybody’s mind,” Brady said on “Dennis and Callahan” on WEEI. “I [couldn’t] really care less about those type of things. When you reflect back, you think, ‘Wow, that was a great year.’ But when you’re in the middle of it, you can’t do anything about a game in December. We’ve got one mission, it’s this week. It sounds like a cliche but it’s not, because it works, and it’s what our team’s about. We’re short-term focused.”

Given how locked in they’ve been this season, it’s hard to doubt Brady’s assertion. Given the way the Patriots have played and the makeup of the rest of the schedule, it’s also hard to find much fault with people outside the organization thinking that going undefeated is a real possibility. They have trips to the Meadowlands to face their Super Bowl Kryptonite, a.k.a. the Giants, and to Denver for a matchup with the Broncos in the next four weeks.

Getting through that stretch without a loss will only up the anticipation of a run at matching the 2007 team and shooting to do them one better in Santa Clara come February.
