Whether John Fox and John Elway were just paying lip service or not, they told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen that Brady Quinn could be the team’s starting quarterback last month.
Quinn has been working out this offseason with the idea that he’s not comfortable as a backup.
“I want to be No. 1,” Quinn told Mike Klis of the Denver Post after joining Broncos player-only practices for the first time Tuesday. “I feel they [Orton and Tebow] both had a chance last year and I didn’t get an opportunity. I’d love to get an opportunity to help us win games and get this team to the playoffs and see what happens from there.”
We don’t doubt that Fox and Elway are entering this process with an open mind. Orton could be traded and Tebow is raw.
Quinn starting is not that crazy, but he has one thing working against him. He’s worked under three head coaches -- Romeo Crennel, Eric Mangini, and Josh McDaniels.
Not one of those men trusted Quinn to consistently start games, much less be a “franchise quarterback.” There just isn’t a lot of reason to think Fox will feel differently.
