Matt Cassel is back as the starting quarterback for the Chiefs, at least for this week.

Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel confirmed today that Brady Quinn has been ruled out for Thursday night’s game against the Chargers after suffering a concussion on Sunday, which means that Cassel is back in the starting lineup. Ricky Stanzi will be the Chiefs’ No. 2 quarterback in San Diego.

Cassel suffered a concussion of his own in Week Five, and after seeing Quinn play in Cassel’s place, Crennel decided to stick with Quinn even after Cassel was cleared to return. But now that Quinn is hurt, it’s Cassel’s turn to try to prove he belongs as the Chiefs’ starter.

Cassel has already faced the Chargers once this season, throwing three interceptions in a Week Four loss, one of the many games this season in which the Chiefs have shown off an absolutely dismal passing attack. That’s probably not going to change whether it’s Cassel, Quinn or Stanzi playing quarterback.
