The Colts didn’t have an opening drive touchdown in the regular season, but they appear to have uncovered one key to a quick start.
Give the ball to Dan “Boom” Herron as often as possible. Herron caught two passes from Andrew Luck for 26 yards, busted a 27-yard gain around the left end of the Colts offensive line and then ran two yards for a touchdown to open up the scoring in Sunday’s playoff opener against the Bengals.
Bengals cornerback Adam Jones and defensive lineman Geno Atkins were caught jawing at each other on the sideline after the Colts took the lead. Coach Marvin Lewis got between them as their discussion heated up, which probably isn’t where he wanted to find himself four minutes into this one.
Luck converted a third-and-seven by completing a pass to tight end Dwayne Allen just before Herron took the ball into the end zone. He almost got a touchdown a few plays earlier, but T.Y. Hilton couldn’t hold on to a nicely thrown deep ball when he came down to the turf.
The Colts last scored on their first possession in last year’s Wild Card round. They beat the Chiefs 45-44 in a wild one on this day last year.
