It’s been three drives and the Chargers cannot stop the Broncos’ offense.
Bo Nix threw his second touchdown of the game — this time to fellow rookie Devaughn Vele for a 6-yard score to give Denver a 21-10 lead midway through the second quarter.
With 6:22 left in the second quarter, the Broncos already have 219 yards. They’re averaging 7.8 yards per play and are 3-of-3 on third down.
On this third possession, Los Angeles’ defense had a chance to get off the field on third-and-11 for a three-and-out. But Javonte Williams gained just enough on a check-down pass to move the chains.
That’s when Denver got its big play on the possession, with Nix hitting Marvin Mims on a short pass to the left side that the receiver took 54 yards down to Denver’s 6-yard line.
While Nix’s next throw went off of Javonte Williams’ hands for what should have been a touchdown, it didn’t matter. On the next play, Nix rolled to his left and found Vele open in the end zone for the score.
Officials initially had thrown a flag for an ineligible receiver downfield but picked it up. Prime Video rules analyst Terry McAuley noted that it did appear to be a foul, despite officials wiping it away.
On their previous possession, the Chargers scored on a 37-yard field goal. The club had third-and-1 in the red zone, but the run play was blown up for a 2-yard loss. Head coach Jim Harbaugh elected to settle for three from Cameron Dicker instead of going for it on fourth-and-3.
