Thursday night was ugly for 49ers quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

Gabbert managed just 162 yards while completing 18 of 31 passes, an average of 5.2 yards a pass, with one touchdown, two interceptions and seven sacks in a 33-21 loss to the Cardinals. Gabbert said he “let this team and this organization down tonight” after the game.

“Yeah, I’ve got to play better,” he said. “There’s no question to that. I’ve got to do a better job of leading this football team, executing this offense, scoring points, the whole nine yards.”

Chip Kelly’s entire offense is a letdown, and Kelly acknowledged after the game that he’d consider every possible change, including benching Gabbert for Colin Kaepernick.

It’s hard to see what the harm in benching Gabbert would be. Kaepernick probably isn’t going to turn this team around, but Gabbert definitely isn’t the answer.
