Bill Belichick believes NFL teams would have considered him for a head coaching job when the season ends next month, but he decided not to wait and see because he liked the job offer from North Carolina.
Belichick told Jim Gray on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he doesn’t know for sure what would have happened if he had waited for NFL job interviews to begin after the season but thinks teams would have considered him.
“I think there would’ve been some interest, but in the end, really, it’s not about what could’ve been or would’ve been, it’s about the opportunity at North Carolina. I think this program is in the right spot now to take off,” Belichick said.
Belichick said he believes he can build a winning team at North Carolina and do it quickly.
“We’re gonna get the team, make it as competitive as we can as soon as we can,” Belichick said.
Belichick’s buyout with North Carolina being reduced to $1 million in six months suggests he would like the flexibility to leave in 2026 if the NFL has interest. But North Carolina is where he’s going to coach for now, at least.
